Theatre and Drama played an important role in the development of art and culture of the Bishnupriya Manipuri Community. It is said that the pioneer in playwright from both India and Bangladesh is "Gokulanondo Gitiswami". His plays "Matrimongol" and "Samaj Sanskar" created a revolution in the field of Bishnupriya Manipuri drama. Many drama movements during the twentieth century flourished under reputed dramatists like Lt. Aswini Kumar Sinha, Debadatta Sinha and Indra Kumar Sinha hailed from Narsingpur, Silchar.
In the later years another dramatist and actor Sri Birendra Sinhä of Tinokhal ( Patharkandi) continued the drama culture and popularised it by forming his own team " Joly Opera".
In the recent time, the drama movement reached a new scale under the able guidance of dramatist and director Sri Shuvashis Sinha (Sameer) who did his professional studies at Jahangirnagar University. He is a unique leader, united the local youths, trained them up, to make the productions of his drama team "Manipuri Theatre" with plays like "Ingal Adhar Pala", "Debotar gras", "Kohe Birangana", "Sri Krishna Kirton", "Mon Pahiya" memorable. Jyoti Sinha, an artist of international fame emerged at the apt hands of Shuvashis Sinha. Her performance will be remembered by masses for years to come. Performance of "Manipuri Theatre" group greatly influenced the legend of Indian Drama Ratan Thiyam, an Indian Playwright and Theatre Director who happened to visit the place of "Manipuri Theatre" at their village Ghoramara, Bangladesh out of love and respect.
